When was the last time you drank from a green cast-iron drinking fountain with one hand on your horns and the other spooned under your nose? Yes, we are talking about the TORETs, the more than 800 bull-headed fountains that have been distributing public water for 150 years, and in these days of restraint, they gush lonely in the streets, squares, parks and along silent, deserted avenues.
The people of Turin have always loved them, and for some years now they have been mapping them, adopting them, photographing them, counting the drinks they have taken… AtlasFor proposes them as a pretext for a game that takes one on a walk around the city.
A small GRAN TO(U)R ET in ten stages that retraces the history of Turin, discovering secrets and curiosities. Look for a Toret on Atlasfor and explore the point of interest that holds it: it will tell you which clues to look for in the figurative tale of that point to take you to the next toret.
TEN SMALL BULLS
The hosts of our game are them: ten green cast-iron guardians, each near a place. Entering AtlasFor with an initial clue and many scattered hints, you will have to FIND THEM ALL and discover the places where they live. Each bull will show you where to look to reach a brother at the next location. It’s a roundabout of fountains, where you can enter from anywhere and recognise others by following the clues scattered throughout the story of each place step by step.
THERE’S MAIL FOR YOU
Of course, you can’t run into the street and look for the clues around the fountains… yet. You have to make do with finding them on a map. The To(u)ret one is AtlasFor, Atlas of Cultural Heritage and Active Landscape.
You can find it by opening EXPLORE ATLASFOR and clicking on Play with AtlasFor (ARCHIVE LINK).
To help you get in the game, follow us on our social profiles FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM in the early days.
POSTCARDS are coming! Each one gives you clues to where one of the Torets is hiding: if you can figure out where the postcards come from, you’ll have extra clues to enter the fountain circle and find the places where the Torets are hiding.
THE ATLAS TOUR
How to play? Enter Atlasfor’s archive of games Play with AtlasFor (LINK) and start your search, travelling on the map from one place in Turin to the next. It may help you to take into account the clues suggested by the postcards on Facebook.
Choose from the icons that populate the map: clicking on each one will open a CARD with a description of the point of interest (POI). When you find the place (POI) indicated by the riddle – or one of those indicated by the postcards – open its tab. If you are in the right place, you will immediately find a Toret in the NEWS chapter! Open the NEWS of the Toret: a clue will tell you which element of the card (MEDIA) to look for. Once you have located the MEDIA, read carefully and you will find the reference to the location of the next Toret. And so on from place to place until the ring of ten Torets is closed!
AN EASY EXAMPLE
If I tell you that ‘the first Toret, due to containment, is snoozing on the sofa in the “living room” of Turin’… You’ll realise on the fly that he’s in Piazza San Carlo! Open the square’s Atlasfor the Toret in the News:
Read the text of the News: it invites you to ‘take the four corners of the square as a sheet’.
To understand what it is about, explore the card: in the chapter PARTICULARS you find a MEDIA that tells you something: of course, the sheet is the Shroud! Which in fact is depicted in the corners of the square.
In the text of the MEDIA accompanying the image you find a reference to a place: the DUOMO
It is in the tab of that POI (at the Dome) that you will find the next Toret, with another clue, which refers to another MEDIA, and from that the indication to move to a new Toret.
WARNING, this is just an example! You will not find it in the TOURET game
